Sweetwater Trail

Sweetwater Trail

Distance: 4.8 miles round trip (out and back)
Hiking Time: 2.5 hours (round trip)
Elevation Gain/Loss: 700′/700′
Difficulty: Moderate

Directions: Exit Interstate 805 at Bonita Road and go easy for about 4 miles. Keep going straight on San Miguel Road at the intersection where Bonita Road swings north and crosses the Sweetwater River. After about a mile on San Miguel Road, turn left on Summit Meadow Road, which leads to Sweetwater Summit Campground. Where you begin your hike.

Starting from the North end of Sweetwater Summit Campground, the Sweetwater trail runs east, first passing a fishing access area for the reservoir. After about 1 miles the trail veers sharply right and begins a series of rather tough up’s and down’s. Your goal is the flat top of a prominent knoll ahead, where you will find a picnic table, with a wonderful view of South Bay.

This is a great viewing spot that is about 2.4 miles into the hike, and is a great place to turn around. Up ahead about 2 more mles is the foot of San Miguel Mountain. Beyond that, it is possible to follow trails and dirt paths paralleling the Sweetwater River all the way to Highway 94. The right of way for this extension of the trail is not yet settled so you may have some navigational problems.
